Daily Devotion on Acts 9:36-42

Text:  Acts 9:36-42

The risen Savior inspired a lot of love in the early Christian church. The first disciples overflowed with joy which displayed itself in loving acts of service. Tabitha, also called Dorcas, was one such disciple. She is described as one who was always doing good and helping the poor.

It so happened that Tabitha died. Peter was called to see what had happened and met all the women that mourned the loss of this faithful female. In great love and with greater power, God granted Peter the ability to raise Tabitha from the dead. Her time of grace was extended a while until she would finally die to live in heaven forever.

Why? Why would God do this? And why doesn’t God do this anymore today?

Recall that the Bible was not quite finished yet. The written testimony of the Savior was not complete. So when the early Christians went around preaching and teaching a Savior that died and rose again, those early audiences must have thought they had escaped the funny farm!

But such a great miracle was a testimony to the power of the Lord and the validity of the message. In many ways, these first miracles served the purpose that Jesus’ miracles did. They pointed to the power of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior of all.

Today, we have the completed Word of God. We have written everything we need to know about Jesus. We can read the eyewitness accounts. We can hear from the disciples exactly what Jesus said and did.

Today the Lord pours out his power and love through his Word and through Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Through these mighty means we are daily wrapped in the love of our Lord. And like Tabitha, this love of our Savior fills us with joy and inspires us to love too!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, loving Savior, you have shown boundless mercy and love to me. You have forgiven my many wrongs. You died that I might live. You are with me every day. You hear and answer my prayers. I pray that you now fill me with such love to daily serve you and serve others. In your loving name I pray. Amen.
