What Kind of School Is This Anyways?
Recently, NBC’s Dateline did a feature story (video below) about day cares and Preschools in the United States. The findings weren’t so good. In fact, they were down right scary.
Chris Hanson interviewed parents who had a nightmare day care experience–one that seems like it came from an episode of Law & Order SVU rather than real life. Unfortunately it was all too real. The child of these loving parents was essentially hog tied and silenced with tape over the mouth while at school!
The feature story went on to share how they went undercover and discovered that many day cares and Preschools had employees that have no business being around children. The interesting (or sad) thing about the story is that it only scratches the surface. It exposes some loose rules and unqualified employees. But the story doesn’t even begin to explore the quality of care and education that the schools provided.
At Christ the King, we are very proud of our Preschool. We have a fantastic staff of teachers. Each one has special talents and abilities. Each one has passed background checks. Almost every single one is a member of our church, and the few who aren’t are members of a different Christian church. These are teachers that can be trusted.
In addition, we recently got some good news about the quality of education that our loving staff is providing. At the beginning of every school year the Kindergarten students in Florida are tested on how ready they are for that Kindergarten year. The Preschools they attended are then given a rating for how well they prepared these students.
This year 51 of our 58 VPK students from last year were tested. (They can’t always test everyone because of families that move or sicknesses that day, etc.) The low bar is 70%. Below that and you are considered a “low performing school.” The maximum score is 100.
I am so proud to share that Christ the King scored a perfect 100! Every one of our VPK students was ready for Kindergarten! In addition, well over half of them tested out to be “high performing” students!
This accomplishment is even more impressive because Christ the King had the highest rating of any VPK in all of Flagler County, was the only Preschool that scored a 100, and the next closest Preschool was only a 94!
I’m very thankful to my wife, Becky, our Preschool Director and a lead VPK teacher, for all of her hard work. Stacey our assistant Preschool Director and other lead VPK teacher did an equally great job. And of course, they couldn’t do as well without their assistants Lisa and Heather.
What a blessing to have a safe, loving, and excellent school environment here at Christ the King, unlike the ones featured in the video below! We pray that we can continue to do such a great job as we continue to grow as a school!
