Daily Devotion on Genesis 22:1-18
Text: Genesis 22:1-18
What incredible mercy of God! What miraculous power! God finally provided a son for Abraham and his wife Sarah. They waited about 100 years for a child. They were way past the normal age of reproducing. And, Sarah was barren! What love, kindness, and power shown to them by God!
But it all quickly came crashing down around them with two simple and horrifying words from the Lord: “Sacrifice him.”
What would you have said? “You want me to do what, God? My son? My son? My only son? You’ve got to be kidding me! No way!”
Abraham didn’t say anything. He simply obeyed. Even as his dearest and only son asked him where their sacrifice was as they climbed up the mountain, Abraham told him that God would provide. In fact, Hebrews reveals to us that Abraham simply reasoned that God would raise Isaac from the dead.
Could you do it? Could you show such strength of faith when tempted to disobey God?
Shamefully we hang our heads and confess, “No! Not even close!” Daily we face a host of temptations and all too often we take Satan’s bait and repeatedly fall into sin.
Thankfully, we have a brother who has the power to resist temptation. We have a brother who defeated Satan. We have a brother that is also God himself.
Jesus is where we find the power and the strength to overcome temptation. He who resisted all sin and then died for ours is the one who has all power in heaven and earth. That power is what is with us each day to “lead us not into temptation.”
Abraham displayed a special measure of strength when tested by God and faced with the temptation to disobey him. That same strength of faith is ours through Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen me each day to fight off the myriad of temptations that Satan uses to lead me into sin. You have conquered sin and death, allow me to remain strong in the faith that I might be like Abraham of old and boldly refuse that which is not in keeping with your will. Amen.
