Daily Devotion on Isaiah 40:1-11

Text: Isaiah 40:1-11

Have you ever seen your own version of the stereotypical homeless man standing by the side of the road with a message from God scribbled on a piece of cardboard? These “messengers” from God are often portrayed by Hollywood as dirty, ragtag, unshaven bums with a stolen shopping cart containing all their possessions in the background. These are not the kind of people we educated Americans take seriously.

If the theme for this week’s Bible lessons was scribbled on a piece of cardboard it would read, “Repent! Christ is Coming!” The bums holding the sigh… Isaiah, and John the Baptist.

These two men had hard jobs. They both had the God given responsibility to call the Israelites to repentance. They had the difficult task of looking their brothers and sisters in the eye and telling them that they were sinning and needed to stop. They both were treated like those bums on the side of the road holding a cardboard sign, to a certain extent. Both men were persecuted for their message. Both men had their message rejected by many.

What about you? Will you reject Isaiah when he tells you to prepare the way for the LORD? Jesus came once on Christmas, he will come again. As Christians it is our joy to not only prepare our hearts for Jesus second coming by repenting of our sins but we also share Isaiah and John’s task of preaching that message to the world. People will look at you like you are crazy. Living as Christians will make you different from others, but don’t let that stop you. Jesus will tend us his flock as a shepherd, he is carrying us close to his heart. Jesus will come again soon and take us to be with him in heaven.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, forgive us when we fail to live constantly prepared for your second coming. Give us repentant hearts that look to Jesus our Savior for forgiveness and guidance. Grant us the strength and eloquence to preach your message of repentance to all those who need to hear it. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
