Daily Devotion on Psalm 47
Text: Psalm 47
What is your favorite musical? Personally I love White Christmas. My family watches that musical every Christmas Eve after opening presents so it holds a special place in my heart. After watching a musical I often wonder what this world would be like if people acted as if they were in a musical. For one thing there would be people spontaneously singing in malls and grocery stores across the world.
One side of musicals that I’m not sure would happen in today’s America is all the emotions. Musicals portray people wearing their hearts on their sleeves. When an actor is having strong emotions in a musical they sing about it. Many in America, especially men, would have a problem doing this. Our culture makes it pretty clear that it is not acceptable to display every emotion to strangers.
As Christians however, there is one emotion that we are encouraged to share. Psalm 47 fits perfectly with a Christian’s musical. This Christian musical consists of clapping hands, cries of joy, trumpet blasts, and singing songs of praise. Why all this hubbub? What emotions are Christians encouraged to share?
“For God is King of all the earth!” This is why Christians shout for joy. Our God is ruling over all his creation. God is ruling in our lives and he is an awesome God. He has given us forgiveness through Jesus blood; he has given us love in so many ways; he has given us peace because our almighty God is in control; he has given us hope for a future life in heaven with him.
“Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises!”
Prayer: God our King, we have failed to serve and love you in the perfect way you demanded. Forgive us for our failures. Help us to always live our lives in joyful song to you because you are our great and awesome King. You chose to give us an inheritance in heaven, you rule over all things for our good. Praise be to you God our King! Amen.
